Christianity & The Arts

Although the building is no longer a working church, The Holy Biscuit aims to be the home of a vibrant Christian creative community helping to resource and support those interested and involved in the arts in Newcastle, the North East and beyond. This is specifically in response to the desire by the Methodist Church in Newcastle to facilitate a creative Christian presence in the art scene in Newcastle and the North East.
We strongly believe that Art for Christians is about expressing the reality of the world that is around us, and from that expressing, with integrity, the reality of the God who is There – a God who desires to participate and transform every aspect of our lives.

Since her opening in May 2010 there have been several exhibitions, workshops, discussions and conferences that have explored  the relation between art and faith. (check out some of them here )

At the moment, our programme for 2011/12 is looking at having discussions and visits to the Baltic – themed around the Turner Prize, a prophetic arts weekend, a conference and maybe even a film festival as well as having fortnightly Lunchtime worship and prayer!  We hope this provide space to further develop relationships around our community but also to encourage and inspire those who are working in the arts and with artists.

In addition to our desire for THB to be a hub for discussion, inspiration and support for Christian creatives, we are also keen for the space to be used as a place for immediate community outreach through the arts, a place where ordinary members of the community can come and be creative. Working alongside the Council, local schools, charites and church leaders in the area we are working to develop The Holy Biscuit as a place for genuine grassroots creativity and as a catalyst for social regeneration and social cohesion, which is key part of the misson of the Methodist Church.
